Program Overview
The goal of CanSkate is to teach the basics of skating with an emphasis on strong technique. The program has six stages, and by the end of Stage 6, skaters will have developed the skills needed to move into the ice sport of their choice.
The first few days may look a little chaotic as we help skaters get comfortable standing and walking on the ice, while also assessing group placements. Group assignments may change throughout the season as skaters progress.
Once groups are established, sessions follow a clear structure:
-
Warm-up
-
Lesson time/group activities
-
Cool-down
All components are timed and guided by music.
Although sessions run for 45 minutes, younger skaters may tire earlier in the season. If your child shows signs of fatigue after 30 minutes, this is completely normal. It’s best to let them ease into the full 45 minutes rather than push them to stay on the ice.
Skating can also feel overwhelming for some children. We will never force a skater to stay on the ice if they are upset. Our goal is to make skating a positive and fun experience—bit by bit, their comfort will grow.
Each skater will receive a name tag at the entrance table. Please attach it to your child’s clothing before they go on the ice. Once groups are assigned, their tag will also display their group colour.
Skater Progress & Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the program. Once a skater demonstrates a skill, they will move on to the next level of that skill.
Facility Information
-
CanSkaters may use the dressing room listed on the whiteboard when they arrive at the arena.
-
Once your skater is on the ice, parents/guardians should proceed to the benches or viewing gallery. To help skaters stay engaged, viewing from ice level, the glass, or the players’ boxes is not permitted.
-
If your skater needs assistance, coaches will get your attention from the ice.
-
Parents/guardians of skaters under 12 years of age must remain in the facility during the session.
